Hillsboro High School’s Family Engagement Night – A Community Trick or Treat Open House was a HUGE Success!
Future, current and past came to celebrate the community of Green Hills and Hillsboro High School. Future Burros (K-8th grade) and their families came to mingle and on campus with current HHS students and participate in a variety of carnival and Halloween activities on October 29, 2018.

Students and teachers from the amazing  clubs, teams, organizations, and study pathways were on hand to pass out candy and lots of information about the organizations and how each is involved int he community. Thanks to all the clubs and Academy Coach, Melissa Wrenne for making this event a huge success!

WHAT’S HAPPENING THIS WEEK

Tuesday: School-Day ACT for Seniors
The senior retake of the ACT is October 30. A reminder that this is for seniors only—those who want to take it again to try and improve scores, or those who haven’t taken it yet. Good luck, Burros!

New Traffic Pattern Beginning November 1
Due to our construction project entering a new stage, the car rider line will shift from entering off of Glen Echo Dr. to Richard Jones Rd. This will happen on November 1. For more information and a map, click HERE.

The Hillsboro Players Present The Caucasian Chalk Circle
Don’t miss the Hillsboro Players’ epic production of Bertolt Brecht’s classic The Caucasian Chalk Circle. Opening night is this Thursday, November 1, at 7pm, with additional shows at 7 pm Friday, November 2 through Monday, November 5. Join us as we flee war with Grusha and her child through the Caucasus Mountains in a show that offers drama, humor, political commentary, and brand-new original music. Help Make Money for Hillsboro Athletics
Hillwood is allowing us to use their concession stand Friday night as we host the first game of the divisional playoffs. No grilling, but we need friendly helpers to staff the stand! Click HERE to sign up.

Winter Guard
Ms. Biederman is starting a competitive winter guard team and sign ups are due November 2. You do NOT have to have prior color guard experience to join!

This group is for anyone who is eager for a competitive winter activity and would like to learn about dance, spinning flags and rifles and be part of an exciting, choreographed show!

Cost is $400, and fees go toward uniforms, flags, weapons, floor, staff/instructors, competition entry fees, and national winter guard association registration. Practices will take place on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 3:30-6:30 and will begin in early December.

Occasionally, the group will practice on Saturdays, and they will attend 3-4 competitions during February, March, and April. To sign up or for more information, email Ms. Biederman at [email protected].

Hillsboro Day at McDougal’s 
Let McDougal’s do dinner (or lunch) for you next Monday, November 5, and they will give 20% back to Hillsboro! You can go to either location–Belcourt or White Bridge Road–anytime from open to close, and there’s no need to bring a flyer—just let them know you are there to support Hillsboro!

Interested in Traveling to Costa Rica During Spring Break?
Group leader and Spanish teacher, Emarie Elliott, is looking for up to 4 more people (students and parents welcome) to join the Language Immersion to Costa Rica tour during spring break. This trip is an incredible opportunity, especially for those hoping to excel in and further their Spanish language skills by being immersed in the culture and language of beautiful Costa Rica. The trip is 4 months away, and a monthly payment plan is possible. There will be an interest meeting on Monday, November 5 @ 6:00 in Emarie’s classroom, room 201. Our boys played for the state semifinals last season! The season officially starts after winter break. ACT and SAT Prep
MY TEST TIPS ACT & SAT Prep: Nashville-based My Test Tips is offering two-hour, one-on-one, private session workshops this fall. In these workshops, students will identify & correct test-taking mistakes using their own ACT practice test book, learn more effective strategies to improve their chances to increase scores, and more. Parents & students interested in further information should email [email protected].

WHAT’S HAPPENING THIS WEEK

NHS Applications Due Tuesday, October 23
Last reminder—applications for the National Honor Society are due October 23 (recommendations are due 10/30). Students in 11th and 12th grades who are eligible for membership have been invited to apply with a letter. PTSO Meeting and Construction Update Thursday
Join us October 25, at 6:00 PM in the library for our monthly PTSO meeting. In addition to our regular PTSObusiness, we will welcome the architect and contractor team to hear an update on the major progress that has been made.

First Project Lit Book Discussion—Donations Needed
Hillsboro is participating in Project Lit, and the first community book discussion will be on October 25 at 4:30 PM (prior to the PTSO meeting). The community is invited to join in the discussion on the first book, Born A Crime by Trevor Noah. Donations of food to feed students who will stay after school that day to attend the meeting would be appreciated! Please sign up HEREif you can bring something, and thank you!

Senior News

Welcome back Seniors!  We hope you had a great fall break and found time to rest and relax!  We are back and winter break will be here before you know it, but we want to be sure that we keep you informed of important deadlines to keep you on track for the remainder of the semester.  Please be sure to get these dates and information on your calendar!

GOODIES FOR GHOULS (AKA SENIOR TREATS!)
We still need a few more goodies for our senior ghouls!  Please help us treat our hard working seniors!  We will be handing out goodies and t-shirts to seniors on October 31 and we need a few more people to sign up to bring treats.  You can click HERE to sign up.  Thank you!

FAFSA WORKSHOP NIGHT
FAFSA Night will be held Thursday, November 1 from 5:30-7:30pm in the HHS library. There will be a financial aid/scholarship mini-lesson from 5:30-6PM followed by the FAFSA workshop, where everyone can get help completing their FAFSA. The workshop will run from 6-7:30PM. A TSAC representative will be present. Seniors are encouraged to attend with their parent/guardian. Students are eligible to fill out the FAFSA if they (the student) are a US citizen, legal permanent resident, or other eligible non-citizen with I-94 approved paperwork (such as a refugee or asylee).

Materials to bring to FAFSA Night:

  • Social Security number/s for student and parents (parents without a SS# can use 000-00-000)
  • Student’s driver’s license (if applicable)
  • Alien Registration Number if student is a legal permanent resident (parent citizenship information not required)
  • 2017 federal tax information or tax returns, including IRS W-2 information for student and parents
  • Records of any untaxed income, such as child support received, tax-exempt interest income, and worker’s compensation
  • Information on cash; savings and checking account balances; investments, including real estate and business and farm assets

DATE CHANGE – FOOTBALL SENIOR NIGHT
Senior Night for the football team has been changed to October 26.  The game will be played at Hillwood High School.

MORE IMPORTANT DEADLINES

  • Yearbooks will increase in price on November 2nd to $60.  Go to Jostens.comto buy yours today before the price increase.
  • This week is the last chance for senior quotes.  If one is not submitted to tinyurl.com/2019burroseniors by the end of the week, the yearbook staff with select one for you.
  • There are a few spots left for baby photos — send photos to [email protected].
