This year on November 3, Australian vocalist Tkay Maidza released her 2nd studio album, “Sweet Justice”. Notice how we called her a vocalist. That’s because calling her just a singer or just a rapper would be underselling her. This multi-talented artist has been in the music industry since 2013 and has gained traction with her “Last Year Was Weird” series of EPs and a feature from Killer Mike of Run The Jewels.
This primary genres are contemporary R&B and pop rap, but she also tends to venture into other genres such as neo-soul and industrial hip-hop. Tkay does all of these styles well. Because of all of these styles on one album, some people admire it for its diversity while others consider it a mess. One user on Album of The Year said “this latest album from Tkay Maidza is yet another VERY mixed bag. Hopping around between Rap, R&B, Dance, P
op and more at this point is Tkay’s calling card. But once again I find myself seeing major consistency issues.”
If you want to hear Tkay’s amazing singing vocals, check out “Out Of Luck,” “Walking On Air,” “WASP” and “Won One.” These are just a few, there are plenty more examples of the album. But if you want to hear her showcase her arsenal of rap flows and deliveries over hard-hitting production, then check out “WUACV,“”Ring-a-Ling,” “Silent Assassin” and “Free Throws.”
Tkay has stated in an interview that “it’s almost like a breakup album, but [breaking
up] with the aspects of people I once knew and who I thought I was – that kind of perspective.” One song that especially goes into this theme is the Aaliyah and Usher inspired “Won One,” in which she sings “you remind me of guy that I let go / You remind me of a friend that got too close.” Her willingness to explore whatever style or genre that she wants to signifies how her confidence has grown since her first album.
Overall, Tkay Maidza’s first full-length project in 7 years is a worthwhile listen for current fans of hers, and especially for people who haven’t had the pleasure of experiencing this diverse artist’s music yet. If you like pop, rap, dance music, or R&B there should be something for you on this album. Some fans may have been disappointed, but this album proves her to be a talented artist to look out for regardless.
