Castaway Mr. Story names his all-time must have discs for his stay on a desert island

Desert Island Discs is a radio programme broadcast on BBC Radio 4. It was first broadcast on the BBC Forces Programme on 29 January 1942. The Hillsboro Globe follows in the tradition of the original programme and talks with faculty and students to find out what treasures they would keep on their desert island.

Castaway: a person who is stranded in a place where there are no other people

Imagine that you find yourself stranded on a desert island, isolated from all other civilization. You are faculty member of Hillsboro High School or you’re one of the many students who have special headphones that isolated you with your music away from all the chaos happening around you.

You are a castaway on a desert island, and you have the option to choose ten recordings with you to your island.

Each week the Hillsboro Globe will interview  a ‘castaway‘ to discuss what recordings he or she can’t live without, those recordings that will last him or her a lifetime. Think it is easy to pick – try choosing your top three and send us your choices at [email protected]

Our first castaway is new to Hillsboro audio-visual guru, Mr. Doug Story. He explains his list as ” a hard list to make. No jazz, No R&B. No World or Funk. But if I’m going to be stuck on an island. I need to have my favorites and even though Dylan and Rouse aren’t on my top 10 artist list, they deserve to be stuck on this island making me happy in a deserted island.”

Open your ears and take a moment to listen and read about his Desert Island Top Ten.

1) Todd Rundgren- Something/Anything

DS: “Not my favorite Todd album but it’s two records in one, so on an island I need quantity and quality. Todd Rundgren is my favorite artist and I could have the entire collection be Todd but…….”.

2. Bruce Springsteen- Born to Run

DS: “‘Cuz tramps like us, baby we were Born To Run’. It’s the BOSS, you have to have some Springsteen on a deserted island, plus one of my personal favorite songs THUNDER ROAD, has a great line, “it’s a town full of losers, I’m pulling out of here to win”.

3. David Bowie- Ziggy Stardust

DS: “David Bowie is my next favorite artist. Again not my personal favorite album,  but the man does classic rock albums that ROCK OUT. Classic songs like “Suffragette City” and “Moorage Daydream” make this album a daily tasty treat even on a deserted island.

Bob Dylan, Blood on the Tracks

4. Bob Dylan- Blood on the Tracks

DS: Again, Blood on the Tracks is a classic. Blood on the Tracks speaks to the soul in the man. Favorite song, “You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go”.

It’s like a soap opera on a platter. Dylan may not be for everybody, but this album should on everybody’s deserted island list.

5. Saw Doctors- Sing a Powerful Song

DS: “Sing a Powerful Song is technically their greatest hits album. I am trying to avoid greatest hits albums to stay with the purity of a true album released, but since this is an Irish Band no one knows…. I’m taking this with me. They are fun, they are Irish, they just put you in a good mood. This is probably my party album. Party of one.”

6. Todd Rundgren – A Wizard, A True Star

DS: “Okay, it’s another Todd album, but this is my favorite. Look it up. Rolling Stone magazine ranks this album as one of the 500 greatest albums in rock history. Now 500 albums sound like no great honor but think about that list. Look that list up. Todd has two albums in the top 500 and I’m taking both to the deserted island with me…….which leads me to my next choice.”

7. David Bowie – Diamond Dogs

DS: This is not even my favorite album by Bowie, but it has the best rock song ever, “Rebel Rebel”. When Bowie died in 2016, the one song artists did as a tribute to Bowie was Rebel Rebel.

This song has everything you need, want, must rock out to. The lyrics are a teenager’s anthem and every rock fans eargasm. So, I put two albums by Bowie, my second favorite artist, on the deserted island list.

Yet, neither are my favorite. Why? Because “Rebel Rebel” and “Suffragette City” are two songs you must have on your playlist for life. For the record, my favorite Bowie album, Station to Station.

8. Josh Rouse- Nashville

DS: “I have to have a smooth singer-songwriter recording and this is that album. The irony is that the title is Nashville. This is where Rouse decided to regroup after struggling in his personal life.”

“The recording has a certain flow with its songs. It opens with a song that should be a top ten hit, “It’s the Nighttime”. This song gets stuck in your head like a beautiful summer day. Perfect for being on a deserted beach.”

 9. U2-Achtung Baby

DS: “I love the sound, love the energy of this recording. I love the band and play recording loud proud. With each song the album just infects you. I might even replay “Even Better Than the Real Thing” back to back. Those opening chords from theEdge (guitarist) makes you want to run around the beach because being on a deserted island what else could you do.

10. Fleetwood Mac- Fleetwood Mac (The White Album)

DS: “Plain and simple it is some of Lindsey Buckingham’s best work. He is one of my favorite artists as well. “World Turning” and “I’m So Afraid” are two of my favorites off the recording.  I don’t think a day would go by I wouldn’t want to hear this album.
