The Austin Peay Governors women’s basketball team picked up a big win on Sunday, defeating the Evansville Purple Aces 63-57 on the road. The victory moves the Govs to 5-2 on the season and ends a short losing streak.
The game was tight through three quarters, with the score knotted at 43 heading into the fourth. That’s when the Govs took over. Back-to-back three-pointers from Mya Williams and Jim’Miyah Branton gave Austin Peay a 52-46 lead with less than six minutes to play. Evansville tried to rally, but the Govs stayed strong, getting a clutch free throw from Veronaye Charlton and holding on for the six-point win.
Evansville started fast with a 4-0 lead, but Austin Peay answered quickly and went up 8-4. The Govs built a 31-22 advantage late in the second quarter thanks to free throws from Williams and a three from Jade Rucker. Evansville closed the gap before halftime, and the third quarter was a back-and-forth battle that ended tied at 43. In the final period, Austin Peay’s sharp shooting and calm play made the difference.
