Nashville is a very diverse city, with a variety of cultures and cuisines to explore. As a self-proclaimed chai-connoisseur, I tried a bunch of different chai’s around the city to tell you what’s worth your money, and what to avoid.
Chai is one of those drinks that seems simple on the surface but is surprisingly hard to get right. A good chai should have warmth, depth, and a balance between spice and sweetness, not just taste like hot milk with syrup. As someone who leans toward a spicier, more traditional chai, I decided to put Nashville’s chai scene to the test, from well-known chains to local cafés.
Over the span of January and early February, I made it a mission to try as many hot chai lattes as I could, paying close attention to flavor, spice level, sweetness, temperature, price, and overall experience. Here’s my honest breakdown of each one: what stood out, what fell flat, and which chai’s are worth your money depending on your taste preferences!
Kahawa — Kahawa Chai

★★★★★ (5/5) | Spicy, Sweet
Medium, Hot
Price: $5.99 | Purchased: February 8, 2026
This is exactly the kind of chai I was looking for. It’s almost creamy without sacrificing spice, incredibly aromatic, and packed with that strong, unmistakable “chai” flavor. The atmosphere is fantastic, and the staff, who are also family members of the owner, are warm and welcoming. Easily my favorite on this list.
Starbucks — Chai Latte

★★★★☆ (4/5, possibly 3.75) | Spicy, Sweet
Calories: 240 | Caffeine: 95 mg | Small, Hot
Price: $5.43 | Purchased: January 9, 2026
Be cautious when drinking this right away, it’s very hot and can burn your tongue. That said, I really enjoyed the aftertaste; the spices don’t immediately fade, which was unexpected from a major chain. Overall, the flavor surprised me in the best way and made this one of the stronger contenders.
Ugly Bagel — Chai Latte
★★★★☆ (4/5) | Spicy, Slightly Sweet
Calories: 260 | Caffeine: 95 mg | Medium, Hot
Price: $5.50 | Purchased: January 14, 2026
Ugly Bagel isn’t a sit-down café, but the staff is extremely friendly. While it’s not their own chai mix, it’s still very well made. The chai comes in 16 oz and 20 oz sizes and is steaming hot at first—after waiting a minute, it’s the perfect temperature. The taste is very similar to Starbucks’ chai latte, but slightly spicier, and you get a bigger cup for a similar price.
Dunkin’ — Chai Latte
★★★☆☆ (3/5) | Medium Spice, Sweet
Calories: 290 | Caffeine: 105 mg | Small, Hot
Price: $5.04 | Purchased: January 8, 2026
This chai isn’t scalding hot, which is a plus, and it starts off a little frothy before settling. However, the sweetness tends to overpower the spice more than I’d like. It’s not bad, but it leans heavily toward sweet-side rather than a balance between spicy and sweet.
Beignets & Brew — Chai
★★½☆☆ (2.5/5) | Mild, Sweet
Calories: 120 | Caffeine: 18 mg per serving | Small, Hot
Price: $5.43 | Purchased: January 15, 2026
This is a light, mild chai that works well for those who want something gentle. It’s extremely hot when served, so don’t drink it immediately. The café only offers regular chai; chai lattes are likely limited-time specials. The staff is friendly, and the shop itself is very cute and cozy.
The Peach’s — Chai Tea Latte

★★½☆☆ (2.5/5) | Mild, Sweet
Calories: 260 | Caffeine: 38 mg | Medium, Hot
Price: $5.21 | Purchased: January 22, 2026
Once again, this is a very mild chai—not my personal preference. Still, it’s a good option for people who prefer mellow flavors and don’t enjoy the strong spice that traditional chai is known for.
E+ROSE Wellness Café — Chai Latte
★★☆☆☆ (2/5) | Spicy, Not Sweet
Medium, Hot
Price: $7.41 | Purchased: February 9, 2026
For the price, I expected much more. It tasted like straight spice, nuts, and water, with no balance. It was very frothy, and once it cooled down, it became almost undrinkable. I think much of chai’s appeal comes from the harmony between sweetness and spice, and this one only delivered the spice. I ordered the recommended cashew milk, and the only sweetener options were maple syrup or honey. The café itself is calm and beautiful, but the barista seemed impatient, which hurt the overall experience.
Frothy Monkey — Firepot Chai Latte

★★☆☆☆ (2/5) | Mild, Slightly Sweet
Calories: 250 | Caffeine: 35 mg per serving | Medium, Hot
Price: $5.31 | Purchased: January 10, 2026
I really wanted to like this one, but it ended up tasting the least like chai out of all the drinks I tried. It felt watered down, with very little spice or sweetness, just kind of mid. The presentation is beautiful, but the flavor was disappointing.
Final Verdict:
If you love bold, aromatic, and traditional chai, Kahawa is the clear winner. Starbucks and Ugly Bagel are solid, spicy options for something reliable, while Dunkin’ caters more to sweet preferences. Many local cafés shine in atmosphere, but not all deliver on flavor. Ultimately, the best chai depends on whether you prioritize spice, sweetness, or vibe (but if you’re chasing real chai flavor, you know where to go).
