In a disappointing outing last Sunday, the Tennessee Titans fell to the Denver Broncos 20-12, failing to score a touchdown. Despite a strong defensive effort, the Titans managed only field goals. The loss highlights the Titans’ struggles on offense, as their failure to score a touchdown raises concerns about their ability to generate points moving forward.
While the Broncos commanded the field with 317 total yards compared to the Titans’ 133, Tennessee’s inability to capitalize on scoring opportunities proved costly. The Titans managed to put points on the board with four field goals by kicker Joey Slye, but they were unable to find the end zone, frustrating fans and players alike.
The biggest struggle that the Titans faced was a weak offensive line that allowed for 6 sacks in the pocket, disrupting the rhythm of their offense. This, combined with turnovers, significantly contributed to their struggles, making it difficult to secure a win despite a strong defensive performance.
Turnovers also plagued Tennessee, contributing to their struggles. The Titans coughed up the ball twice, leading to crucial scoring opportunities for the Broncos. However, the Titans played a strong defensive game, forcing two fumbles and two interceptions caught by Xavier Woods and Roger McCreary.
During the after-game press conference, head coach Brian Callahan called the loss “disappointing” while reflecting on the offensive performance of the second half. While the loss is a disappointing one, Callahan continues to bring a positive outlook on the loss an opportunity to grow saying, “The next game’s coming in seven days… we’ve got to clean up what we didn’t do well and get ready to go play another game.”
Starting quarterback Cam Ward held the same optimistic spirit saying, “At the end of the day we’ve just got to continue to get better. It’s only game one, we got a long road ahead of us. We’ve got 16 more to get a win.” Being a rookie and the first pick in the draft, Ward is taking time to adapt to a new team and work with an offence with many holes in it.
Going forward, the Titans will go on to play the Los Angeles Rams at Nissan stadium at 1pm September 14. The rams are a clear favorite going into the game with many projecting a 10-point difference. An upset isn’t impossible if Tennessee develops their passing and running game and figure a way to prevent more penalties of third down. However, only time will tell how capable the team is of growing.
