37 Hillsboro Students attended the 43rd annual Model United Nations Conference sponsored by the YMCA Center for Civic Engagement in Murfreesboro last weekend. They had the opportunity to represent various nations in a recreation of the United Nations where they debated and addressed various international issues such global poverty, climate change, and international conflicts.
Several students also won various awards for their achievements throughout the conference:
Jonah Lehmann – Outstanding Delegate
Suzanna Wilkinson – Outstanding Delegate
Ella Seals – Outstanding Delegate
Tommy Fox, Larkin Bulbulkaya, Sophie Brown – Outstanding Resolution
This was the first Model UN conference for several students including Sparrow Stone who was spoke with the Globe about their experience “It exceeded my expectations completely, I didn’t expect how much I would enjoy it, I thought it would be boring, but I enjoyed it a lot.”
The Hillsboro Globe also spoke to Sarah Plumb. She had been helping out in the club since 2021 and this year she has taken the reins as the lead sponsor. She spoke on how she initially got into Model UN stating “I’ve always loved learning about the world and have been involved in humanitarian-ish organizations since I was a kid. In fact, dream job at one point was to live abroad working for the United Nations. I started at Hillsboro in 2020 and learned about Model UN and thought i sounded like a great opportunity for students. Then, the previous sponsor asked me to help out in 2021 and I’ve been involved ever since.”
Sarah Plumb was joined by first year advisors Ashly Brooks and Sophie Barton. The Hillsboro Model UN club will convene in the spring to get ready for the YMCA Youth in Government Conference where students represent members of the Tennessee State Government.
