New grading scale; How it affects teachers and students

Hillsboro Globe Reporter – Haley Woodward, Student

The new grading scale going into action for the 2022-2023 school year which affects both teachers and students have had mixed reviews with most. It is called the 10-point grading scale, it is set to affect thousands of students which…

“Dr. David Timbs, Supervisor of Secondary and Instructional Technology for Johnson City Schools, said he expects the scale to be a great help to students.”

The previous grading scale was the 7-point grading scale which had been in use since August of 2007, most believed was harder trying to get the grade within the 7-point system. During the previous generation the 10-point system was used but then changed which had some people more upset than others.

“We don’t quite recall when someone got the bright idea of using a 7-point system, but we’re glad our local systems came to their senses and are going back to what worked for decades. It should have never been anything else, but some folks can’t help meddling just to be meddling.” Editorial: Tennessee’s new grading scale makes sense to us | Editorials | timesnews.net

This helps with college scholarships of out of state since most other states use the 10-point system so its puts everyone at the same level.

Hey!!  Good questions!

  1. I definitely prefer the new 10-point scale.  I think it helps students more and it is more aligned with a lot of other school districts.
  2. As a former teacher, I think this 10-point scale would make things easier.  It’s easier to remember and it means fewer students will fail.
  3. The new grading scale should make it a little easier for students to get into college!  However, there are some colleges that recalculate applicants’ GPA to their own scale.  For these colleges, it may not make a big difference.
  4. If it was up to me, I’d go with the 10-point scale!

The following represents the new grading scale:

(1) The “A” letter grade is represented by the numerical range of 90-100.
(2) The “B” letter grade is represented by the numerical range of 80-89.
(3) The “C” letter grade is represented by the numerical range of 70-79.
(4) The “D” letter grade is represented by the numerical range of 60-69; and
(5) The “F” letter grade is represented by the numerical range of 50-59.
