Hillsboro High School has officially elected its new Student Government Association (SGA) officers for the 2024–25 school year! After weeks of preparation, campaigning, and voting, students across all grade levels selected peers to represent them. The results were announced on August 27th, with officers expected to begin their duties on September 4th.
The elections were held on campus at Hillsboro High in Nashville, Tennessee, with oversight from faculty sponsors Ms. Brooks and Ms. Guice. Both worked together to ensure the process was easy and engaging for students. “Yes, with my first time doing elections, I was nervous but wanted to make the experience as easy and fun as possible,” Ms. Brooks shared. “Ms. Guice and I worked to make sure that the timelines provided enough time for all students to participate. I think that it was successful, and the stressful part is hopefully behind us. We envision a truly student-led organization that works to make a fun, memorable, and impactful school year for every student at Hillsboro. With the students taking the initiative and support from faculty, I think we have a great opportunity ahead of us for the year.”
To qualify for candidacy, students had to meet a set of eligibility requirements. Applicants were required to submit three teacher references and run within their assigned graduation cohort. Academic and behavioral standards were also critical: each candidate had to maintain at least a 60 average in all classes on the most recent report card or progress report, have no more than five unexcused absences during the semester, and avoid out-of-school suspension.
The student body elected the following officers to lead school-wide initiatives: President Praise Ufot, Vice President Issac Rosburg, Secretary Kelsey Huffman, and Treasurer Avery De Riesthal.
Class-level leaders were also chosen:
- Seniors: President Carys Thiel, Vice President Jamiya Mason, Secretary L
auren Gillis, Treasurer Christiana Jordan
- Juniors: President YoRec Gant, Vice President Lillian Fowler
- Sophomores: President Hadiel Ibrahim, Vice President Israel Onaghinor
- Freshmen: President Valerie Salinas Rivera, Vice President Jaide Davis
In addition to the elected officers, Members-at-Large will also serve on the SGA. This group includes: Jerron Barnes, Michiah Neal, Jazmine Davis, Jasiah Gardner, Hudson Hutton, Anyelin Quiroa-Ramos, John Farag, Danya Cedillo Del Valle, Anaya Ashford, and Ariel Moore. These individuals volunteered to assist in planning and executing student events. Though not elected, their presence expands the SGA’s capacity to represent a wide range of student voices.
The work of the SGA begins immediately. Officers will gather this week (September 1-5) during CCR (College Career Readiness) for their first meeting, where they will finalize operational plans and introduce themselves to the student body. From there, the organization will dive into planning some of the most anticipated events of the school year. Responsibilities include leading pep rallies, organizing spirit days, overseeing tailgate planning, and brainstorming additional activities to strengthen school spirit and community engagement!
For many students, winning an office is about more than just a title—it represents an opportunity to shape the student experience. One newly elected member-at-large, Danya Cedillo Del Valle: “I want to make sure my class has a voice, make the year fun, and just contribute to the school.”
With a full government of motivated leaders and strong faculty support, Hillsboro’s SGA is predicted to create a fun and memorable year for students. As the officers step into their roles this week, the focus is clear: student-led action and school-wide unity.
