NASHVILLE,TN–In an exciting football 2024 season opener , Hillsboro triumphed over McGavock with a score of 25 to 14, showcasing their skills on McGavock’s brand new turf field. The Tennessee titans, over the next 4 years will be converting ever MNPS school’s football field to turf. McGavock High School is the 5th school to get its new field.
Hillsboro’s offense was led by quarterback Trey Hodges, who completed 10 of 14 passes for 168 yards and threw for two touchdowns. The ground game was powered by Dom Hamer, who carried the ball 11 times for an impressive 116 yards and scored one touchdown, providing a strong presence in the backfield.
In the receiving department, several players made key contributions. Wide reciever, Sylrelle Burton, caught two passes for 26 yards and secured a touchdown, while Joshua Cartmell added three receptions for 48 yards and also found the end zone. Zion Puckett was a standout with two receptions for 78 yards, contributing significantly to the team’s offensive efforts. Micheal Bennett Jr. and Trevor Hobbs added depth to the passing game with two and one receptions, respectively, totaling 9 and 12 yards.
Overall, Hillsboro’s balanced offensive attack and solid defensive performance led to a well-deserved victory in Week 1 of the 2024 TSSAA football season.
Defensive Standouts: On the defensive side, Hillsboro showcased a strong performance, with several players making impactful plays:
- Zion Puckett: 3 tackles and 1 interception
- Joshua Cartmell: 4 tackles
- Micheal Bennett Jr.: 5 tackles
- Karreon Woodruff: 7 tackles
- Sylrelle Burton: 3 tackles, 1 interception, and returned it for a touchdown
- Glen Richardson: 3 tackles, 2 for loss
Additional contributions came from Xavior. Lockett, Josiah Stewart, Markel Hamm, and Justin Carrethers, each adding solid defensive plays.
Special Teams: Caleb Durnin handled punting and kickoff duties effectively, with 3 punts totaling 135 yards and 6 kickoffs for 161 yards. He also converted 1 out of 3 extra point attempts.
Overall, Hillsboro’s balanced offensive attack and sturdy defensive effort led to a well-deserved victory, setting a positive tone for the season ahead on McGavock’s new turf.
