Hillsboro Globe Reporter – HIllsboro Academic Desk

Hillsboro High School has a strong belief in “IB For All”.

Hillsboro High School is honored to continue the 18-year legacy as having three open access IB programmes representing varying levels of academic preparation.

Hillsboro Class of 2022 earns 44 IB Certificates

Forty-four IB Career-related Programme Certificates and IB Diploma Programme Diplomas were awarded to Hillsboro students in July, 2022. In order to obtain the IB Career-related Certificate, students must earn an average score of 3 (on a scale of 1 to 7).

Students take both internal and external assessments scoring at least 2 out of 2, 3, or 4 IB Diploma Programme courses. In addition, students engage in a cross-curricular course that combines academic subjects and career-related learning called Personal and Professional Skills.

Students write a 3,000-word research-based Reflective Project on an ethical dilemma of their choosing, complete a world language portfolio as part of the Language Development component, and learn through experience by completing 50 hours of self-selected service experiences through the Service-Learning component.

To obtain the IB Diploma, students must earn an average score of 4 (on a scale of 1 to 7) on internal and external assessments across six subject areas: English, World Language, Mathematics, Science, History, and the Arts.

In addition, students write a 4,000-word research-based Extended Essay on a topic of their choice and submit a portfolio of learnings by completing 18-months of self-selected experiences in the Creativity, Activity, and Service component.

Of the graduating class of 2022, 39% participated in an IB programme or took at least one IB course, and 53% of participants are students of color deriving from a myriad of ethnic and racially diverse backgrounds.

Students Excel in Subject-level Certificates

In addition to the students who earned the IB Diploma and IB Career-related Certificate, an additional 64 certificates in individual subjects were awarded to students.  Students earn individual subject certificates by earning a 4 or higher on individual subject exams.

This year, several students earned a perfect score of 7 in several subjects.  We also want to recognize the students who earned an A on their Extended Essay and Reflective Project.
