Dylan Miller and Mathew Kelly at the Hillsboro High school international day, March 29th 2018. Their project was on Ukraine.

Hillsboro High School held its annual International Day Fair recently and as one would expect of an International Baccalaureate World school, the whole school contributed to the cultural celebration that is the Burro community. Students chose countries to research and present at the fair, dressing in cultural or native clothing, served food native to that specific country and as with the Hillsboro tradition, each country was presented in a parade of flags, dance and music.

Ms. Strsinger, a new teacher to Hillsboro was very impressed with the day-long event which she said, “broadens students’ horizons and affords students the opportunity for students to learn more about their contemporaries and to gain a better  understanding of their own place in the wider community.”

Key organizers of the event were organized were student leaders Yamen Sandoval, Piper Fleming and David Ware. Mrs. Rucker, Hillsboro’s IB Spanish teacher is the events advisor. Students and staff are encouraged to come to school dressed in traditional dress for their country of origin, with the best costume chosen at a whole-school assembly and awarded a prize.

The day included a special exhibition of research for each country at which staff and students host stalls with displays, food and music. Students are also encouraged to participate in student lead activities and learning new skills.

Hillsboro values the importance of celebrating diversity that exists in both the classroom and the Nashville community. This event teaches each of us to learn more about each other, and then once we know more about each other we come to respect each other.
